Dr James Kustow is a London-based Consultant Psychiatrist and The Grove’s Medical Director.

He runs a truly integrative private clinic located at 127 Harley Street, and also works in the NHS one day a week in the field of Adult ADHD. James is a general adult psychiatrist with considerable experience working with the full range of mental health problems encountered in adulthood. In recent years, he has worked as a psychiatrist to a London-based university, seeing students with mental health difficulties.

He is also a trained integrative psychotherapist and has an interest, and many years of experience using, body-focussed interventions when working with psychological trauma and its various and broad ranging manifestations. Amongst other approaches he is trained in hypnotherapy (Diploma), EMDR (Adv) and EFT (Adv). James has also trained in nutrition, believing this to be critical for optimal mental wellbeing.

James studied medicine in Nottingham and trained in psychiatry with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals) and at St Mary’s Hospital.

James is a respected clinician both within and outside the NHS. One of his main areas of specialist expertise is Adult ADHD. He works in one of the very few London-based specialist Adult ADHD services in the NHS. He is on the Executive Board of UKAAN (the main professional organisation for Adult ADHD in the UK) and is UKAAN’s Training Programme Director. The comprehensive training programme UKAAN offers is highly regarded in the UK and further afield.

James is a recognised national and international speaker on Adult ADHD. He is currently chairing a team of European ADHD experts in the 2017/8 update of the pharmacotherapy section of the European Consensus Statement on Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult ADHD.

James has a pioneering approach to psychiatry. He has already introduced personalised medicine into his practice, in the form of pharmacogenetic testing, which allows a more targeted and informed approach to medication choice.

He is also one of the very few consultant psychiatrists in London using leading medical device, ‘Alpha-Stim’, a safe and extremely well tolerated FDA-approved treatment for Anxiety. With scores of clinical studies to support its use and 30 years’ experience, this leading cranial electrotherapy technology is likely, in time, to become routine clinical practice, as it provides a highly effective alternative to medication. Alpha-Stim is currently being considered for NICE approval for the treatment of Generalised Anxiety Disorder, following a successful study in the NHS. Dr Kustow is a Lead team Expert for the NICE Medical Technology Guidance Development for Alpha-Stim. 

James is on the Board of Trustees of the London-based Anthony Nolan charity and was the founder of the award winning ‘Marrow’ programme, a network of university groups across the country, which provides a third of the UK’s stem cell register.
